Julie is the BEST. I worked with her for 9 months and she was always responsive, informative and an amazing listener. I've been up and down with my fitness and weight ever since college, and had some big life changes all the past year. I wanted to get to the root of past behaviors with food and exercise and that's exactly what Julie helped me with. Knowledge wise, I've done all the deep dives into nutrition, fitness, etc. but the root hadn't been addressed. She helped me see that all that stress, if not faced directly, will eat you up (pun intended). I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica in early 2022 by a rheumatoid arthritis doctor. If you’re not familiar, the pain manifests itself in the hands, shoulders and hips. My pain was around an 8 every morning and although it improved during the day, I had to find relief. The doc started me on a fairly heavy dose of steroids and over a nine-month period slowly weaned me off of them. The pain returned significantly through the Christmas holiday season, and by January she recommended rheumatoid arthritis medicine. I knew I had to figure out an alternative as those meds can be very damaging to your system. My wife met Julie and suggested that I work with her to see how diet may be affecting my health. Julie immediately suggested that I go gluten free and did a great job of supplying recipes and other food options to make the transition as easy as possible. Within a couple of weeks my pain was reduced to a one and some days I was virtually pain free. When I slip and eat something with gluten it is pretty obvious that it has a negative impact, so I remain highly motivated to continue with the changes in my diet. I highly recommend Julie for her knowledge, compassion and encouragement as she is a true professional who cares about her customer’s health. -JK  
Working with Julie has been the best decision o have ever made for my health. I struggled for years with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Although medication helped, I still struggled with flare ups. Julie helped me to recognize how certain foods triggered inflammatory responses which led to a vicious cycle with my IBD. I’ve never felt better since my diagnosis 25+ years ago. I partnered with Julie for about 3 months and it truly changed my perspective on my relationship with food. Prior I was restricting, counting every calorie and macro and still not seeing results. I could write for days about what Julie has done for me. I have spent my the majority of my life dieting and being sad, angry, and frustrated about my relationship with food. Julie is amazing. She has changed my life and how I look at food. Instead of always “dieting” she has taught me what foods are best for my body and mind. Her plan is not restrictive, I can still enjoy the foods I like but now I know when and how to eat them. The results have been incredible! I started working with Julie when my doctor recommended her to help me with my gut health and with losing weight. To be honest, I was so tried of trying to loose weight and improve my physical health. I was exhausted. I really didn’t know what to do next. I like Julie’s method of meeting week to week and setting goals that were attainable for me. The first thing she helped me do is to stop drinking diet soda. I have drank diet soda for my whole life. I honestly didn’t think I could ever stop drinking it. It is now 7 months later and I am not drinking it anymore! I noticed when I stopped drinking it I no longer craved sugary things to eat. It really changed my eating for the better! Julie has also helped me move from an “all or nothing” mentality to a day by day, even hour by hour mentality. My journey with Julie began when my doctor recommended  working with her after receiving some unfortunate lab results on my cholesterol and inflammation numbers--I refuse to go on a chlolestrol drug!  I have also been suffering for years with chronic, somewhat debilitating silent reflux.  Along with this silent reflux came life altering throat clearing and burning, hoarseness, dry mouth, and a constant feeling like a golf ball was lodged in my throat.  I say life altering because there were many times I would avoid social situations due to my embarrassing throat clearing.  My father passed of esophageal cancer and his began with the exact same symptoms I was experiencing.  Between my frustration with the symptoms from the silent reflux and my lab results combined with my age, I became very concerned and motivated.   I always thought I had a fairly decent handle on what I ate and a vast knowledge of what was healthy.  What I found was that while I knew (or thought I knew) a lot about how to eat, I was not doing it!  At all.   When Julie and I started we began to dive deep into my habits, I discovered a lot more about my eating habits that were contributing substantially to my poor health.  I was a (somewhat) vegetarian, HUGE bread lover and a butter and cheese addict.  I used the excuse to eat cheese and butter as my protein intake since I was not getting my protein anywhere else.  All these habits lead me to have a very unhappy gut, high cholesterol and inflammation that was wreaking havoc on my body and especially my throat.   If I am being honest, I was pretty miserable.   Julie worked with me to find ways to change my diet that were individual and obtainable for me because there are several foods I just couldn’t stomach (most meats and fish!). We didn’t start with doing it all at once.  We worked by eliminating the foods that she believed were contributing to my issues.  Gluten, dairy, and bad fats!  When I stopped eating gluten, added healthy fats and vegetables as well  as protein and collagen to my diet things began to change.  A little at a time.  And the results for me were profound!  I have been able to add a few things back into my diet without a problem, but I feel so good I don’t really feel the need to eat the way I used to.   My goals were to lower my cholesterol and reduce the inflammation in may body.  While I was able to achieve that, I also was able to manage my reflux issues.  But so many other things happened that I was not expecting.  I can honestly say I am astounded by the way I feel.  When you don’t know what it feels like to feel good, you have nothing to compare.  Now I know.  Feeling unhealthy is definitely not fun and incredibly stressful.   These are a few of the most noticeable things that happened to me when I changed my lifestyle and healed my leaky gut: -Labs results showed I have lowered my cholesterol, triglycerides and most important my inflammation levels substantially -No longer taking protonix and amytriptine (taken for the throat clearing problem) for my silent reflux -Throat clearing very minimal to none (and when I say it was bad, that is an understatement) I never thought this could be possible -No more joint pain (I had a lot, but just thought it was a part of aging) -Better workouts and mood -No acid reflux -Hunger managed more than it has ever been by incorporating healthy fats and protein -Healthier looking skin   While this is always going to be a work in progress, I cannot imagine wanting to go back to my old eating habits.  I did not start working with Julie to go on a diet, I wanted to change my lifestyle.  My motivation was to have good health and longevity as I age.  I feel confident I have achieved that this far and will continue to see great results.   I recommend Julie, she explains everything about the gut and why you react to certain foods in a way that is relatable and easy to understand.  She is a fantastic listener and communicates in a very non judgemental caring manner.  Of all the years of trying to diet, I finally feel that I “get it”.   For me, it was the individual attention I didn’t even know I was craving.   Definitely worth the time, effort and money. At first I was resistant about working with Julie. I had tried so many diets, losing and gaining weight over and over again. Julie didn't push me. Instead she provided information and encouraged me to think about trying her approach. I decided to give the detox a try. It was only 10 days and I was determined to stick with it. My husband agreed to do it with me, which was a big help. Surprise, Surprise! I lost weight on the detox and I enjoyed the food. Since I was on a roll, I decided to continue working with Julie and keep losing weight. At my first one on one session with Julie, I was pleasantly surprised to find that she didn't make me weigh myself. She was more than happy to take my word on what I weighed based on my scale at home. I don't know about anyone else, but the scale is scary and Julie's approach helped me not to put a big emphasis on it. I was also pleasantly surprised at Julie's approach to talking through my challenges and listening to my input as we planned on how to navigate and conquer difficult food situations. However, the biggest thing that Julie helped me with was to show me that I could enjoy eating healthy food everyday without feeling that I was depriving myself. Other diets that I tried emphasized eating "diet food" that didn't have much flavor. Julie told me to eat whole foods, limiting but not necessarily eliminating some of the foods I enjoyed but that had been labeled "bad" by other diets. I could still enjoy a nice evening out, I just needed to think about how to fit it in with the rest of my day or week. If I fell off the wagon, no big deal...just get back on and keep on going! I feel healthy, strong and happier with my body and appearance. I still have a few pounds to go, but Julie helped put me on the right track to reach my goal. Thanks for everything Julie.-K.M.  
I worked hard to stay active throughout COVID but I also found myself eating and drinking more than usual. I was feeling sluggish, suffering from muscle fatigue and popping pain relievers. I thought garage-floor workouts were taking its toll or I was just starting to feel my age. A friend recommended Julie’s detox as a way of resetting my eating habits. The detox was transformative not only because I was motivated by seeing my waist again but more importantly because I felt really good. "Thank Heavens for Julie Hiller! My weight has yo-yoed for years, and I have tried everything, including Weight Watchers (4x), the Scarsdale Diet, Jenny Craig, the Rotation Diet and Atkins with only temporary and fleeting success. In late summer of 2020 a dear friend told me about Julie Hiller. I called the next day and had my first appointment the next week. I cannot praise Julie enough. I kept waiting for her to weigh me and set a strict diet, but that is not what this is about. Instead, Julie helped me set three goals each week, and I documented what I ate. Weekly consultations and education materials combined with goals and documenting helped me retrain my brain. A Keto cup became a great substitute for a Reese’s cup and I learned that I don’t even need the Keto cup as often anymore. "I love chocolate. I love butter. I love fresh, soft, warm focaccia dipped in good olive oil with a cheese topped plate of pasta and a good glass of wine. I love food with taste. Real food. I love to make these foods as much as I love to share them with people I’d like to share them with. I’ve always loved food in these ways but I’ve never really understood food. By that I mean, I knew what I enjoyed, I knew how to make it, knew what was sinful but never really understood what certain foods did to the body once you ate it. I came to Balance with an interest in better understanding nutrition and extra few pounds that I didn’t mind shedding. Before working with Julie Hiller I was working out 3 days a week and eating what I thought was a pretty healthy diet. I wasn’t interested in juice cleanses,  meal replacement bars or kale shakes.
