Happy New Year!

I’m hoping you all had a great holiday and were able to spend some time with friends and family.  As typically happens, each New Year we set (or at least think about setting) new goals for ourselves.  Many of us take the next step and actually write out a plan.  The hard part comes in when it’s time to carry out the plan and even harder when we determine we need to stick to the plan.   One thing I’ve learned in working with others is having an accountability partner truly makes a difference in whether we succeed or give up.

The reality is positive change happens when you have someone cheering you on, holding you accountable, and walking the walk with you.  You can think of an accountability partner as someone who understands your journey and is ready to help you achieve success.  I truly believe we all need an accountability partner…no matter what it is we are trying to accomplish.

Here’s why:

  • An accountability partner knows your objectives. They know what you are working towards and can help you recognize the times where you start getting unfocused. They can help you get back on track by reminding you of the benefits of achieving your goals and can be a constant source of insight and motivation. They’ll help keep your energies up and your willpower strong.
  • They help keep you motivated– An accountability partner can be a much-needed source of motivation, inspiration, strength, and support. This is someone you can trust with the thoughts and feelings that are holding you back from achieving progress. A partner can talk with you and help you to resolve any negative thoughts you might be having. They’ll do this by giving you a chance to work through them slowly with support and encouragement. By overcoming negative thoughts, you allow yourself to put your total energy towards achieving success and growth.
  • They provide support and advice– Since your accountability partner is working alongside you, they’ll have insights into your progress. They can also help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. They’ll pinpoint areas that require more attention and focus. In this way, you get trusted advice and support that will help you recognize behaviors that may negatively be affecting your progress and limiting your ability to kick bad habits.
  • They share your happiness and success (This is my favorite part)- An accountability partner is the perfect person with whom to share your happiness and success of your achievements. They can help you see all the progress you have made through your accountability in a new light.  In addition, they can help you to set new and higher goals that challenge you so that you see even more significant results than before.
  • They help you push the limits– An accountability partner can help you challenge your abilities and make you aware of areas that might need some more work.  Because of this, you get the chance to set some higher goals or objectives. You will end up in a better place in terms of progress when compared to doing it on your own.

Having an accountability partner has numerous benefits. It can certainly determine whether you succeed or fail. One of the parts of my job that I love is that I AM an accountability partner and I’m able to watch people achieve goals they never thought possible. I feel pretty confident in writing that having an accountability partner is one of the reasons for their success
