I am writing to share how my beliefs about the use of GLP-1 agonist medications have evolved over the past couple of years. For quite some time, I was frustrated with the craze around these meds because the conversation around GLP-1s seemed to ignore the importance of addressing the root causes of obesity and diabetes; diet and lifestyle. At times, I was even angry about their use for weight loss because it felt like people were using a serious medication meant for managing diabetes as a quick fix for vanity. Using these medications went against everything I believed in.

The media coverage sensationalized GLP-1s  and I questioned whether this class of drugs was just another fleeting trend. Like many others, I had concerns—ranging from the safety of these relatively new medications to concerns about the long-term side effects and the ethics of using these drugs for weight loss in addition to diabetes management.

Over time, many of my clients began asking me my thoughts on GLP-1s and slowly more and more of them began using these medications. One by one, those who had already started using a GLP-1 committed to my 10- week program with the goal of weight loss but also wanting to learn how to eat in a manner that would support their health. This would allow them to maintain the weight loss once they stopped the medication.  I, of course, supported each and every one of them because they had made the decision to take control of their health. As a result of seeing success in my clients and educating myself on the various benefits of these drugs, I can now say I have embraced their use.  However, one thing that has not and will NEVER change is supporting the use of GLP-1s without making changes to dietary and exercise patterns.

This shift has slowly occurred after I observed several clients finally see success as it relates to weight loss; many of who are working their butts off to achieve their goals. I do have to recognize that for some, GLP-1s seem to be a magic pill in that these individuals haven’t made dietary and lifestyle changes and still have seen success (I must admit that this still frustrates me). For those I coach; they have put in the work and I am so happy for them.

My beliefs were also formed after reading several recent large-scale studies that have provided a more comprehensive understanding of both the benefits and risks of GLP-1 medications. These drugs have demonstrated not only significant effectiveness in managing blood sugar and promoting weight loss, but also notable reductions in the risk of major health conditions. For example, GLP-1s are now associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular events and substance use disorders. Some patients, including those with a history of stroke or heart disease, have reported transformative improvements in their overall health, mental clarity, and quality of life.

Moreover, the benefits appear to extend beyond their original indications. There is emerging evidence that GLP-1s may help with cognitive health and even reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. These findings, while still being explored, suggest that the therapeutic potential of GLP-1s is broader than I initially appreciated.

In writing this, I recognize that much of the population still chooses to embrace the journey of health without the use of GLP-1s.  I, of course, believe it is 100% possible to achieve this goal and I am here and ready to help. At the same time, if you are currently taking, considering starting, or wanting to wean off a GLP-1, I would love to guide and support you as well.

These medications are not going away. According to a recent market review, there are currently 39 new GLP-1 drugs in development from 34 different companies. I want to help those taking a GLP-1 make changes that will provide lifelong rewards.  If you are taking a GLP-1 or are considering starting one, I would love to talk.  Head to the link here to sign up for a FREE 30-minute consultation.
